Ascites is derived from a greek word 'askos' which refers to a bag or sac. It can be defined as pathological accumulation of fluid within the peritoneal cavity.

Epidemiology
Cirrhosis is the most common manifestation of hepatic decompensation and 85% of ascites occur in the setting of cirrhosis. On an average 50% of patients with cirrhosis will develop ascites within 10 yrs.Causes of Ascites
